What is an Aerial Image Yardage Guide?
Our Aerial Image Yardage Guide is different from other golf yardage books you may be familiar with, as we utilize actual vertical aerial photographs of each indvividual golf fairway.
A vertical (plan view) image of each fairway shows exact scaled detail of the fairway evenly, from Green to Tee's. Vertical photography is far superior than "oblique" aerial photography which is shot from the Tee end looking toward the Green, and shows the Tee's beautifully but leaves a little stretched impression of the approach and Green end.
Most other yardage book companies use an oblique aerial photograph in producing the outline of a graphic fairway but this is open to misinterpretation and extreme errors in scale and accuracy.
How is a Vertical Aerial Image better?
The high resolution vertical aerial photographs produced by Addis Advertising, Inc., are all about accuracy. A vertical (plan view) aerial image of a fairway is an exact two dimensional replication or likeness of that fairway, right down to position and relationship to other landmarks and objects, i.e. Greens, tees, sand traps, trees, mounds and hazards.
In other words the SCALE of the image is highly accurate, as opposed to a computer enhanced drawing or graphic, created by someone who has not even visited the course!
Once distance arcs are scaled over the image, the known distance is highly accurate. Even intermediate distances to landmarks (trees, mounds) can be perceived or calculated more accurately, from positions not marked.
This accuracy then impacts golf play by portraying the terrain and features with extreme accuracy in scale and perception, thus assisting golfers and course playing times.

What is the "3-D effect" on the graphics?
This is a graphic enhancement, computer generated from our ground and aerial photography to simulate more accurately the vertical (3rd) dimensions on a two dimensional photograph. This enhancement gives the viewer the impression that the mounds appear to be rising off the page and the sand traps are sunken into the page.
The golfer perceives this "enhancement" as three dimensional (3-D), thus assisting the golfer in appreciating the "lay of the land", judging slope or run off on Greens, mounds or anywhere that may come into play, ultimately affecting player enjoyment & final score!

Does the 3-D effect enhance the final accuracy of the yardage guide?
Yes, on three counts!
One, the mounds, swales, creeks, hollows, sand traps and any other variation in elevation are shown much more clearly, as to the degree of slope that could be encountered in play.
Two, the perceived three dimensional effect enhances the image of the fairway, as this example shows, improving golfer appreciation and enjoyment.
Finally, three, if you note the mounds around the Green in the last example, these are depicted exactly as they are on the course.
Our photographers while on the course, will photograph from ground level, every square inch of fairway that comes into play, thereby allowing our graphic staff, who have not visited the course, to have a greater appreciation of slope and elevation changes. Our graphic artists consult with the course photographer regularly, allowing them to faithfully and accurately redraw and enhance the fairway 3-D effects.
